You might be wondering…

Choosing a doula can feel like a big decision, especially if this is new to you. Below are answers to some common questions, but you’re always welcome to get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to talk through.

About Doula Support

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained support person who offers emotional, practical and informational support during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. My role is to support you, not to provide medical care.

What does a doula actually do?

I offer calm reassurance, practical support, and a steady presence. This might include listening, helping you explore your options, supporting partners, and being alongside you during labour or the early weeks after birth.

Do I still need a doula if I have a midwife?

Yes, many families choose to have both. Midwives provide medical care, while doulas offer continuous emotional and practical support. The roles complement each other.

Is doula support only for first-time parents?

Not at all. Many families find doula support helpful in subsequent pregnancies or after different birth experiences.

Working With Me

How do we know if we’re a good fit?

That’s what the free initial chat is for. It gives us a chance to get to know each other and see whether working together feels right — with no obligation.

Do you support partners too?

Yes. Supporting partners is an important part of my role, helping them feel confident, involved and supported.

What if I feel anxious or unsure?

Feeling unsure is completely normal. My approach is calm, non-judgemental and centred on listening, so you can talk openly about how you’re feeling.

What if plans change?

Pregnancy, birth and early parenthood can be unpredictable. I aim to offer flexible support and reassurance, whatever direction things take.

Practical Questions

When should I book a doula?

Many people choose to book during the second trimester, but availability varies. If you’re unsure, it’s always worth getting in touch to talk it through.

Where do you offer support?

I offer support within the Ely and Cambridgeshire area. If you’re unsure whether I cover your location, please feel free to ask.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. I offer a free, no-pressure initial chat so we can explore your needs and answer any questions you have.

Do you offer flexible or one-off support?

Yes. Some families choose ongoing support, while others find a single session or short-term support helpful. We can discuss what feels right for you.

Boundaries & Care

Do you provide medical advice?

No. I don’t provide medical advice or clinical care. I can offer evidence-informed information and support you in discussions with your healthcare team.

Do you attend home births and hospital births?

I support families planning a range of birth settings, working alongside their chosen healthcare providers.

What happens if you’re unavailable?

If I’m unavailable for any reason, I’ll communicate clearly and discuss alternative support options where possible.

Still Have Questions?

If there’s anything you’d like to ask, or if you’d prefer to talk things through rather than read, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
